Walk Through California

Welcome to Walk Through California™!  This presentation is designed to allow fourth grade students to actively participate in a lively retelling of California’s rich history.  Through the use of games, music, and storytelling, history will come alive!

Walk Through California is California Weekly’s first Walk Through presentation and continues to be presented to thousands of classrooms each year. The program focuses on major events that shaped our great state of California. Drama, dance, games, and music support students’ listening skills, vocabulary development, history and geography standards. A large topographical map of California is built for students to experience California’s geography hands-on.

Lauren's part: Mountain

A mountain is high, rocky land, often with steep sides and a pointed top.  A mountain range is a group of mountains that form a wall or chain.

What is the highest mountain in California, and what is its elevation?

The highest mountain in California is Mt. Whitney and the elevation is 14, 500 feet.

This was very entertaining and educational for me, too.   I was a little late {the location was moved to a different school} and I literally walk in and sat down just in time to hear Lauren.  What a fun activity!

Talent Show w/ Lauren

Lauren decided to help a friend out and participate in her "Joke Skit" for the school talent show.  She did this all on her own.  I didn't even know she had auditioned until her friends mom brought her home.  {which was about the same time she would have gotten off the bus:)} She had her parts all memorized, picked out her outfit, arranged her practices and did a fantastic job. She played the part of Be-Quiet.

 

 

This is how it went:

Narrator: Once upon a time there was three little girls named Be-Quiet, Trouble and Manners.  ANd they were out of milk.

Be-Quiet: Hey Trouble, do you mind going to get us more milk?

Trouble: Of course.

Narrator: So Trouble went to the store, but when she was walking back toward her house she made a wrong turn and got lost.  After a couple of hours had past, her sisters started getting worried.  Be-Quiet and Manners began to look for her. Trying to save daylight, they decided to split up.  Be-Quiet went toward the playground, while Manners, knowing Trouble the way she did, headed toward a neighboring construction ground.

Manners: I know that Trouble likes to play in ditches.  She's Trouble after all.  Maybe she's down there.

Narrator: Manners pointed at a ditch she found and thought that it didn't look that steep.  She tried to guide herself down the muddy embankment down to the bottom of the ditch.  But the base wa filled with thick mud and she got stuck.  After too long, Be-Quiet had lost both her sisters and decided to go to the police officer.

Police Officer: What seems to be the problem little girl?

Be-Quiet: My sisters are stuck!

Police Officer: Okay, Okay, We can help.  What's your name?

Be-Quiet: Be-Quiet

Police Officer: (looks blankly at her for a couple of minutes) Um, excuse me?  What is your name child?

Be-Quiet: I said B-Quiet.

Police Officer: (sternly) I'm going to ask you one more time, what's your name?

Be-Quiet: (exasperated) Be! Quiet!

Police Officer: Are you looking for trouble?

Be-Quiet: (smiling) Uh huh!

Police Officer: Where are your manners?

Be-Quiet: Stuck in a ditch!

High School LINK CREW

Ethan is part of the Link Crew where you Volunteer to mentor an incoming freshman student. Link Crew is a club of students who are willing to assist others in the transition from junior high into high school. 

This was freshman orientation day!  He was a group leader and helped with the class hand prints.  He also helped set up for the Freshman Tailgate party. Orange isn't his favorite color but he looks pretty good.

 

Planetarium w/ Lauren and friends

So I was able to go on a field trip this year with Lauren. And yes I got to ride a school bus. And now I have a greater appreciation for school bus drivers. We went to Bakersfield College to their Panetarium. I think I am ready to go back to school to learn. I loved it.  The show included a tour of the evening sky pointing out the major constellations, an all-dome video show, and question-answer time with the resident astronomer, Nick Strobel. We were in a dark room, with comfy seats, watching a great show.  Nick Strobel was very interesting and put together a nice slide show. And I got to spend time with Lauren!!!  and her friend Mina.

 

Lauren's favorite part was that she got to miss most of school.  She said she didn't learn anything! Oh, wait different things about different planets.

Rachel Student of the Month- February 2013

This is always an honor to get a phone call from your child's teacher letting you know that they are being honored today during an assembly. And it never fails that I get a call from Rachel's teacher every year. I love this girls dedication. She deserves to get student of the month. So proud of her!!!

This is what her teacher said about her: Rachel is our 6th Grade Student Body Treasurer. She is a responsible student and I can always rely on her to follow directions and to be an example. Rachel is a respectful student who is always on time and ready to learn each day. She strives to do her best in all that she does. On top of being responsible and respectful, Rachel is also honest. She will always tell me when my jokes are not funny. Thank you Rachel for being a great student.

Matthew's SPCA Service Project

Matthew had an assignment in 6th grade to do a service project for the community.  He chose to gather blankets and towels for the SPCA.  We made flyers that he passed out to the neighborhood asking them to set out anything they may have on their porch in a bag with his name on it and he would pick them up on a certain date.  We got a truck full.  Well, at least a minivan full, tons and tons.  I had pictures of him with his loot but they've been deleted.  We were able to deliver so much "stuff".   Here is a letter he recieved from the SPCA thanking Matthew.

(You own an amusement park....)

My park is a mix park. That means it has a mix of warter parks, gam parks and a buntch of other wuns that you can't even immagen. My fun park cost fifty dollars becuse it has more fun then you can even immagen. My fun fark is opened at one ocloc all the way to twelve ocloc. My best ride is the hourse trail ride becuse evryone likes it and the horeses are welly fast. The best game to play is wacing on water becuse you are trapt in a big ball on top of warter. The best prize that sum wun can win is a huge stuft animal horse. I don't have a job becuse I am the bose.

Hi, my name is Matthew Spendlove,also known as monkey man because I like monkeys.

I am in the 6^th grade in Mrs. Rasmussen's class.

I am running for this year's Grounds & Activity Commissioner.

I have a family of seven including me. My mom tells me I started running before I started walking.

I am very active and love being outside. I love to go camping with my family.

I am on a club soccer team called CCB and I am a boy scout.

I also like drawing and sketching living things.

Here are 3 reasons you should vote for me.

The 1^st reason is I love the outdoors and can stay in the sun almost forever if I wanted to.

The 2^nd reason is I am very helpful and can do almost any job asked to be done.

The 3^rd reason is I am really smart and athletic which is perfect for grounds and activities commissioner.

Now some of you who I've talked to have asked me if I would get soccer nets and all that.

Well, the grounds and activities commissioner can't tell the PTC or the school what to get. But I can work with them and with what they have.

Rachel's Poster and Speech 

Hi, my name is Rachel Spendlove.

I'm in 6^th grade and my teacher is Mr.King.

I am running to be this years Independence Patriot's treasurer.

Something you may not know about me is that I have a twin brother named Matthew.

He is a few minutes older than me but that's ok because I am a few inches taller than him.

I like to go camping with my family and ride my bike.

I also play soccer and volleyball.

I enjoy coloring, drawing, going swimming, and jumping on the trampoline.

Why should I be your new treasurer? Here are 6 reasons why I am the perfect candidate for this office.

R-Responsible. I'm responsible and always do my best.

A-Accountable. I'm accountable because when I am given a job, I always follow through and finish it.

C-Courage. I will stand up for what is right and I CARE about our school and will work hard to make it succeed.

H-Honest. I am honest and will always tell the truth.

E-Excellent. I am excellent in math, which is a good quality to have as a treasurer. I have also been on principals list for more than 2 years in a row.

And finally

L-Loyal. I love our school and will represent our student body well.

In conclusion, I am an honest, dependable and hard working student and I know if you vote for me as treasurer I will do my best to make this a great year.

First Day of School 2012

Another school year has just begun.  I can honestly say that I wasn't reay for my kids to go back to school this year.  Sumer just went by way too fast.  But here we go, Matthew is in 6th grad with Mrs. Rassmussen, Rachel is in 6th grade with Mr. King (Yes, the same teacher Matthew had last year and she is in a 4th/5th combo class) and Lauren is in the 3rd grade with Mrs. Bray.

Ethan was off to seminary bright and early so no pictures of him.  We now have a high schooler!!!

Here's to a great year!!!!!

What can I say about this day?  (besides it was burning hot) Of course I am proud of Ethan, but now I have a high schooler.  What a bright future he has in store!  

 

Brace yourself Ethan and dive into the next four years of your life with all the confidence, strength and integrity you have!  And remember high school is just a stepping stone to much greater things in life. I am so excited to see what you accomplish!!!
